Built between two valleys close to the town of Portimao, the Alto Golf Course was the brainchild of Sir Henry Cotton and was designed to his philosophy that a course should constitute a new test, not only for the low handicapper, but also provide an enjoyable round for less blessed players.

At present it is the longest course on the Algarve measuring 6560 metres from the back tees.  Built on virtually flat terrain a number of water hazards and waterfalls strategically guard a number of the fairways and greens with manmade mounds adding some undulation to the fairways. No two greens are the same, making careful placement on approach shots a must.
