West Kilbide Golf Club
Sitting on the Ayrhsire coast just to the North of famous names like Turnberry and Royal Troon, West Kilbride is a genuine links golf course with real character.
The club was recently host of Scottish Boys, British Girls and Scottish Womens Amateur Championships and is always presented in excellent condition. Sea breezes, typical links-land undulations and out of bounds areas on 12 of the 18 holes combine to create a challenging but very enjoyable round of golf.
A classic out and back links layout along the Ayrshire coast, what more is there to love! Usually playing into the wind on the way out, it is very much a case of keeping yourself on the short grass and trying to plot your way to the safest parts of the greens, avoiding the bunkers that protect the beautiful putting surfaces.
As you turn for home on the 11th, you are presented with a short par 4 to whet your appetite. Then begins the coastal stretch, where it is pivotal you favour as much of the left side as you feel necessary. The 14th is another excellent Par 4, just over 300 yards, with approaches left of the green in the hands of the wall that has stood there for hundreds of years. If your ball colides with the wall, you might get a good break, or you might end up further away than you started!
