Tivoli Carvoeiro

The Alto Golf Club located in the Western Algarve has one of Portugal’s finest golf courses. Built between two valleys close to the town of Portimao, the Alto Golf Course was the brainchild of Sir Henry Cotton and was designed to his philosophy that a course should constitute a new test, not only for the low handicapper, but also provide an enjoyable round for less blessed players.

Morgado Golf Club Course is a great addition to the golf courses in the Western Algarve.  Morgado lies to the north of the town of Portimao and sprawls over an area of 980 hectares.

Measuring just under 7000 yards in length, the par 73 Morgado Golf Course has held major European Tour events and with the addition of Morgado Alamos, the second 18 hole course, this is an excellent addition to the quality golf courses in the Algarve.

The Vila Sol Resort stands in 150 hectares just a ten minute drive from the resort of Vilamoura. The 27 hole layout was designed by Donald Steel and is divided into three loops of varying difficulty: The Prime Loop, The Challenge Loop and The Prestige Loop.

With a choice of three 9 hole loops in a stunning setting, at least one round at Vila Sol Golf Courses is highly recommended during a visit to this area of the Algarve.

Distance From Course: 20 miles

The Old Course is the second oldest course in the Algarve and is built to mirror many of the inland courses in the UK, with a fairly straightforward start getting gradually more difficult as the round goes on.

Large pine trees line many of the fairways punishing any stray tee-shots. The greens are fairly small in size and well guarded, requiring accuracy and careful club selection on the approach shots. Measuring 6800 yards from the back tees, the Old Course Vilamoura has a par of 73 and offers a wide variation of challenges and is a course enjoyed by many golfers of all abilities.

As its name suggests, the Millennium Golf Course opened for play in the year 2000 and is a combination of nine holes from the original Laguna Course and nine newly designed holes.

The generous fairways encourage players to open their shoulders on tee shots. Holes 3 to 7 are exceptions, rewarding accuracy rather than distance. The Millennium is a fairly straightforward course to play as there is a selection of four tees per hole, making it a fair test and an enjoyable course for players of all abilities.

Close to the resort of Carvoeiro surrounded by Olive Groves, the championship Vale da Pinta Golf Course has built a reputation over the years and has one of the best designs on the Algarve.

Dog legs are Pinta`s main feature and accuracy and care must be taken to position your ball from the tee and allow for an easier approach shot. At just over 6600 yards, the par 71 Vale de Pinta Course provides a suitable test of golf for all level of player and leaves a lasting impression on first time visitors.

A sister course to Vale de Pinta Golf Course, Gramacho was designed by Nick Price and Ronald Fream who have teamed up to create a unique and challenging, but attractive layout.

The Gramacho Golf Course boasts a total of twenty-seven greens which enable visitors to experience different challenges each time they play.  A number of strategically placed bunkers and water features litter the course and a high degree of accuracy is required on tee shots and approaches.

Located just a short drive from the resort of Albufeira, the Salgados Golf Course enjoys an open coastal position and is built on a sandy sub soil. Opened in 1994, this course makes an excellent addition to any Algarve golf holiday.

Built in the grounds of the Penina Hotel, the Penina Championship Golf Course was the first course on the Algarve, opening for play in 1966. 

A masterpiece created by Sir Henry Cotton, the course has been carefully upgraded over the years and has played host to a number of major tournaments including the Portuguese Open on seven occasions.

At par 73, the Penina Championship Course is a tough test of golf for the more experienced lower handicappers.

Boavista Golf Course is situated on a headland between Lagos and Praia da Luz in the Western Algarve. Boavista enjoys magnificent views of the Bay of Lagos and surrounding Monchique hills.  Designed in 2002 by Howard Swan, its a new addition to the areaÂ’s golf courses.

Offering two distinct sections and a variety of attractive and interesting holes, Boavista Golf Course provides a good test for the average player with fairways lined with umbrella pines and olive trees,  weaving their way between water hazards and carefully placed bunkers.

Close to the centre of the resort of Vilamoura on flat ground, the Laguna Golf Course is unlike the other courses in the area as it offers a links style feel with few trees and open fairways.

As its name suggests, the Laguna Golf Course has many large water hazards which come into play on a number of holes and strategically placed bunkers require some care on both tee-shots and approach shots. Due to its open surroundings, wind can play a major factor and influence club selection especially on the par 3s.

Nestled in pine forests close to the centre of Vilamoura, the Pinhal Golf Course was originally opened for play in 1976 and partially redesigned by Robert Trent Jones JNR in 1985.

The front 9 requires accuracy from the tee due to tight tree lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers. The back 9 is more open and suits bigger hitters who are not afraid to take some risks off the tee. The course is relatively flat and offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The course boasts great views of the surrounding mountains and valleys and has become a firm favourite among visiting golfers as it offers a good test for all standards of player.

The new Faldo Course owned by Vilamoura is now open and receiving great reviews.  Designed by Sir Nick Faldo with strategic play in mind this 6598m PAR 72 championship course demands careful positioning to score well.

In a modern twist of a traditional recipe, cacti and wild herbs replace the role of Sunningdale's heather, spartan Holm oaks and ancient olive trees take the place of a lush English woodland, and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone replace Berkshire's sandy tracts in a golf course that revels in the classic principles of strategic play.

Designed by Christy O’Connor Jnr., this course complements the neighbouring Oceanico Faldo Course and also takes full advantage of being situated in a fertile valley. Its various water features, both lakes and watercourses that are spread throughout the entire course, demand accuracy and test all golfers. The course has been skillfully landscaped and planted with mature palm trees, affording a lush, ornamental setting like an extensive oasis.
