Pinheiros Altos Golf Course Description

Situated in the Quinta do Lago Estate, Pinheiros Altos Golf Course offers front and back 9s of contrasting styles. The front 9 is built on hilly terrain with tight rolling fairways lined with numerous pine trees. The back 9 is flatter with slightly more generous fairways, although a number of water hazards await any stray shots.

Pinheiros Altos Golf Course enjoys a good reputation among the Algarve`s golf courses and is a firm favourite among many visitors to the area.

Quinta do Lago South

Quinta do Lago South Course is located in an exclusive golf and residential estate bordering the Ria Formosa National Park. There are currently 36 holes at Quinta do Lago and a third course O Laranjal Golf Course, a 18 hole course recently opened in 2008.

Quinta do Lago South Golf Course Description

Built on similar terrain to Quinta do Lago North, the South Course has played host to the Portuguese Open on several occasions and requires a great deal of course management and shot making to negotiate its many hidden dangers. The front 9 requires players to draw the ball from the tee, with the back favouring a slight fade. Water features also come into play on three of the holes and measuring over 7000 yards from the back tees is a course better suited to the bigger hitters. Quinta do Lago golf courses make a fantastic addition to any Algarve golf break.

Quinta do Lago North

The North course is the newest addition to Quinta do Lago, the completely revamped Quinta do Lago North course is sure to be the new number one at this prestigious 5-star resort and the new star in European Golf.

Redesigned by American architect Beau Welling and European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, the new layout has been built to the highest spec with a 9.6 million euros investment programme.  Among the changes introduced on the 6,776-yard course which has been closed since last December, all greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation, drainage systems and cart paths have been rebuilt using the latest state-of-the-art technology, with four sets of tees introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels.

Set amongst 2,000 acres of the picturesque Ria Formosa Natural Park, Quinta do Lago is one of the most highly regarded golf and residential developments in the Algarve since opening in 1972. Located just 15 minutes from Faro airport, the resort offers residents and guests an unparalleled location benefiting from a year-round temperate climate, a variety of lifestyle pursuits and a strong sense of community.

Vale do Lobo Ocean

Another Golf Resort offering two 18 hole courses, the Vale de Lobo’s original 18 hole course opened for play in 1968 and is among the finest courses on the Algarve.  Originally the brainchild of the late Sir Henry Cotton, the Vale de Lobo course offers a great variety of golf holes mixed with stunning views making these courses a "must play" for all serious golfers.

Vale do Lobo Ocean Course Description

The Ocean Course, as its name suggests, runs adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean and offers some of the most stunning ocean views in the Algarve. A combination of links style and inland holes provide an enjoyable challenge, and with tight fairways lined with pine and eucalyptus trees, accuracy is imperative. A recent upgrade was made in 2002 extending the Vale de Lobo Golf Course by almost 400 yards in length bringing it up to standard with its sister course (Vale do Lobo Royal) but not detracting from its overall appeal for players of all standards. It forms an exciting part of any Algarve golf holiday.

Vale do Lobo Royal

Another Golf resort offering two 18 hole courses, the Vale de Lobo Resort’s original 18 holes opened for play in 1968 and are among the finest courses on the Algarve.  Originally the brainchild of the late Sir Henry Cotton, the Vale de Lobo Courses offers a great variety of golf holes mixed with stunning views making these courses a "must play" for all serious golfers.

Vale do Lobo Royal Course Description

The Royal Course was completed in 1997 and became an instant hit with visitors to the area. Set amongst lakes and lush vegetation, the fairways wind their way through pine and fig tree lined fairways which meander down to the ocean.  The signature hole is the par 3 16th which requires a spectacular shot across the cliff tops and has become a well known symbol of the Algarve and is regarded as the most photographed golf hole in Europe.  The Royal Course has established itself as one of the premier golf courses in the Algarve.

Vila Sol

The Vila Sol Resort stands in 150 hectares just a ten minute drive from the resort of Vilamoura. The 27 hole layout was designed by Donald Steel and is divided into three loops of varying difficulty.

Vila Sol Course Description – The Prime Loop

The opening four holes of the Prime Loop are regarded as the most difficult start to any course on the Algarve with long narrow fairways and well guarded greens. The signature hole is the long 6th which has three lakes making careful placement on both tee-shot and second shot a must to avoid these hazards.

Vila Sol Course Description – The Challenge Loop

The Challenge Loop is better known as the back 9 of Vila Sol and is built on more undulating terrain than the sister courses.  The first five holes are fairly straightforward with the only problems being club selection on approach shots to the elevated greens. The last four holes offer a slightly tougher test with tight fairways requiring accuracy and placement from the tee with an iron or fairway wood often the more sensible choice.

Vila Sol Course Description – The Prestige Loop

The Prestige Loop is the newest addition to Vila sol and is the shortest of the three courses.  Accuracy rather than distance is required due to the narrow fairways, with water hazards coming into play on four holes. Despite only having five bunkers, a number of natural hazards have been brought into play and careful placement from the tee is a must to avoid being blocked out on the approach shots by the numerous cork trees which line the fairways.

With a choice of three 9 hole loops in a stunning setting, at least one round at Vila Sol Golf Courses is highly recommended during a visit to this area of the Algarve.

At present it is the longest course on the Algarve measuring 6560 metres from the back tees.  Built on virtually flat terrain a number of water hazards and waterfalls strategically guard a number of the fairways and greens with manmade mounds adding some undulation to the fairways. No two greens are the same, making careful placement on approach shots a must.

With a selection of five teeing positions per hole, the Victoria Golf Course accommodates players of all levels and has already proved to be a unique and unforgettable experience among visiting golfers.

Vilamoura Old

The Old Course is the second oldest course in the Algarve and is built to mirror many of the inland courses in the UK, with a fairly straightforward start getting gradually more difficult as the round goes on.

 Old Course Description

Large pine trees line many of the fairways punishing any stray tee-shots. The greens are fairly small in size and well guarded, requiring accuracy and careful club selection on the approach shots. Measuring 6800 yards from the back tees, the Old Course Vilamoura has a par of 73 and offers a wide variation of challenges and is a course enjoyed by many golfers of all abilities.

The Old Course is in high demand for Algarve golf holidays and requires advance booking to secure a tee off time.

Millennium Golf Course Description

The generous fairways encourage players to open their shoulders on tee shots. Holes 3 to 7 are exceptions, rewarding accuracy rather than distance. The Millennium is a fairly straightforward course to play as there is a selection of four tees per hole, making it a fair test and an enjoyable course for players of all abilities.

Vilamoura Laguna

Close to the centre of the resort of Vilamoura on flat ground, the Laguna Golf Course is unlike the other courses in the area as it offers a links style feel with few trees and open fairways.

Laguna Golf Course Description

As its name suggests, the Laguna Golf Course has many large water hazards which come into play on a number of holes and strategically placed bunkers require some care on both tee-shots and approach shots. Due to its open surroundings, wind can play a major factor and influence club selection especially on the par 3s.

The Laguna Course is an ideal course for the higher handicapper due to its generous fairways and lack of real trouble. Like the Pinhal Course, it is a popular place for visitors to hone their skills before tackling the tougher Algarve golf courses.

Vilamoura Pinhal

Nestled in pine forests close to the centre of Vilamoura, the Pinhal Golf Course was originally opened for play in 1976 and partially redesigned by Robert Trent Jones JNR in 1985.

Pinhal Course Description

The front 9 requires accuracy from the tee due to tight tree lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers. The back 9 is more open and suits bigger hitters who are not afraid to take some risks off the tee. The course is relatively flat and offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The Pinhal Golf Course proves a popular choice with players of all abilities and is an ideal course on which to play the first round of your holiday to warm up for the tougher more challenging courses that the Algarve has to offer.
